Relocating for Work? Read This First

So, you’re considering applying for a role far enough away that relocation would be essential. It can be incredibly exciting: a new scenery, a fresh start and perhaps even that lifestyle change you’ve been craving. But before you get too swept up in the possibilities, it’s important to pause and think practically about what relocation really involves.
As recruiters, we see many reasons why relocations fall through at the last minute. Taking the time to work through these key points can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and confident move.
Here’s your relocating checklist before you sign on the dotted line:
Is your partner or family on board?
It might feel like an easy yes for you, BUT your loved ones might need more time to process the change. We’ve worked with candidates who have missed out on a great opportunity because their partner or family wasn’t included early enough. While you might be ready to move at the drop of a hat, your loved ones may need more time. Involving them from the start keeps everyone on the same page and avoids wasted effort or heartbreak.
What do you know about the new location?
Have you visited before? Do you have any connections there? Exploring the local lifestyle, neighbourhoods and community helps you feel confident that it’s the right fit both inside and outside of work. Does the new role have parking or access to public transport? What about weather? Have you checked what summers and winters look like? You might be surprised. Climate is a major factor for a lot of candidates.
How does the housing market look?
Have you checked what rental or purchase prices are like? Can you realistically secure a place that suits your needs? Knowing this helps you plan and strengthen your salary and support discussions.
Are you ready to leave your current life behind?
A new chapter can be exciting, but it also means stepping away from familiar routines and support networks. Be honest with yourself about what you’ll miss and what you’re looking forward to gaining.
What financial assistance is the company offering?
Has this been discussed upfront? Asking for extra support at the last minute can jeopardise your offer. Be clear early on about what’s included and what isn’t.
Giving notice at your current job?
Double-check your contract; is your notice period what you thought? Confirming your availability helps you align with the new employer’s expectations and start smoothly. Have you taken into account the notice period and the time to pack, relocate and settle?
Have you budgeted properly for the move?
Beyond movers and boxes, think about hidden costs like travel, temporary accommodation, storage and new utility connections. Planning ahead avoids last-minute financial surprises.
What support systems will you have?
Will you have family or friends nearby, or will you be starting from scratch? Consider how you’ll build new connections and where you’ll find support in those first few months. Luckily, hospitality is a beautiful industry where making connections comes easily.
How will this move support your long-term goals?
Does it align with your career aspirations and personal growth? Will it offer you new skills, experiences or the lifestyle you’ve been seeking? Thinking big-picture ensures you’re moving for the right reasons.
Relocating can be an incredible adventure and a powerful next step. Work through this checklist carefully, and you’ll arrive fully prepared and genuinely excited to start your new chapter with confidence and clarity.
